On July 15, 2020, in a horrifying display, a mob assaulted and hurled insults at Reverend Dr. Robert Turner, Pastor of the historic Vernon A.M.E. Church on Greenwood, as he gave a 15-minute sermon in front of City Hall in support of reparations and justice for the victims of the 1921 Race Massacre in Tulsa.
We, the members of Hope Unitarian Church, hereby express our continuing support for the cause of social justice and for equal justice under the law by voicing our collective outrage at the treatment of this good and decent man. We will not stand by silently to allow a mob filled with hatred and fear to define Tulsa.
We, the members of Hope Unitarian Church, state unequivocally and with solidarity that Reverend Turner deserves to be treated with respect and with reverence as he lends voice for so many of our fellow citizens still in pain for unreconciled atrocities visited on them a century ago.
