Roots

The Roots Class is a four session introduction to Unitarian Universalism and the Free Church tradition. If you are wondering if you have been a Unitarian all your life and not known it, this is the class that will help you answer that question. The first two sessions cover the history of Unitarianism and Universalism. You will discover that American Unitarianism evolved out of the New England churches founded by the Pilgrims and Puritans and that three of the first six Presidents were Unitarians. Today First Parish in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the Church of the Pilgrim fathers is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. You will also learn that there are 500 year old Unitarian churches in Transylvania!

The third class is the opportunity to have some fun by playing Unitarian Jeopardy and learning about many of the more famous Unitarians and their influence on our larger society. The final session is a brief recap of the history of our own church and what it means to be one of its members followed by an end of class party when other members of the church are invited to attend. At the end of the class you will have a basic understanding of our history and tradition and will have met and made connections with several other people in the church.

In addition to the class sessions you will have the opportunity to read a number of essays about the history and tradition of Unitarian Universalism. You can also read them right now - links to copies of those essays are in the right hand column of this page.
